Hideaway Barn feels delightfully secluded located as it is in the sleepy hamlet of Ruthwaite. Yet it is just 15 minutes drive from the bustling market town of Keswick, popular for its outdoor shops and activities, ridged mountains and Derwentwater lake. Back at Ruthwaite, you can walk (straight from the door) for miles along the hills of Great Cock Up and Skiddaw and not see a soul. The views from the garden at Hideaway Barn are fabulous – all you can see are Skiddaw, the Caldbeck Fells, Binsey and a lot of sheep.

Ruthwaite is also just half a mile from the village of Ireby which has the Red Lion pub. Once a thriving market town, with the market cross believed to date back to 1200, Ireby is now a truly unspoilt, peaceful fell village. In Spring a music festival is held in Ireby which is becoming quite well known in folk/roots music circles.

An evening stroll along footpaths by the garden of Hideaway Barn takes only fifteen minutes to reach Uldale with its links with Sir Hugh Walpole's highly acclaimed Herries chronicles (or alternatively a five minute drive down quiet county lanes). The Snooty Fox pub in Uldale is popular for evening meals, as is the Oddfellows Arms at Caldbeck, the next village along over the fell road.
