Situated
in upper Eskdale, one of the most tranquil valleys of the Lake District,
Woolpack Farm was extensively refurbished and renovated in 2001
to provide a home for the Fox family. A few months later a larger
neighbouring farm came up for rent and Mark and Gillian moved from
their perfect dream house to a large draughty farm house. Woolpack
farm therefore has all the luxuries that make a place, including
an aga and underfloor heating!
Eskdale is a wonderful starting point for hundreds of walks, either
on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk, which flows from
Scafell at the top of the valley down to the estuary at Ravenglass,
an old fishing village complete with a ruined Roman bath-house!
The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place
for canoeing and for fishing. The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale
Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains leisurely
making the seven mile journey down to the sea.
There are five pubs in the valley, three of which are within walking
distance of the cottage, all welcoming children and serving real
ales and a wide choice of good food. The village shop and post office,
Eskdale Stores, sells a comprehensive range of goods, including
groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol and newspapers.
